4th - 8th December, 2006
Queensland University of Technology (QUT), Brisbane

Applications are being sought for the APAC Summer School in Computational Sciences to be held at the Queensland University of Technology during the 4th-8th December 2006. The school is aimed primarily at postgraduate students and comprises one week of lectures and tutorials in computational science across the following five themes:

  • Numerical Solution of Ordinary Differential Equations
Professor Kevin Burrage and Dr. Roger Sidje, ACMC, the University of Queensland

  • Numerical Solution of Partial Differential Equations
Dr. Andrew Wathen, Reader in Numerical Analysis, Oxford University and Fellow of New College, Computing Laboratory, Oxford, England

  • Numerical Linear Algebra
Professor Daniel Szyld, Department of Mathematics, College of Science and Technology, Temple University, Philadelphia, PA 19122-6094, USA

  • Numerical Optimisation
Professor Stephen Wright, Computer Sciences Department, University of Wisconsin, Madison, WI 53706, USA

  • High Performance Computing
Dr. Jean-Pierre Panziera, chief engineer, SGI, presenting a seminar on Computer Architecture and Scientific Applications Efficiency
Dr. Margaret Kahn, Academic Consultant, APAC National Supercomputer Facility

A detailed schedule and description of the content of the topics planned for each day of the workshop can be found at http://auriga.qut.edu.au:8080/apacsummerschool/

To encourage a wide cross-section of postgraduate students throughout Australia to participate in the summer workshop there is space for a total of 50 student registrations, with 35 positions specifically reserved for student scholarships. These scholarships will cover full accommodation expenses (including breakfast and dinner) for 35 students. There will also be an additional $200 travel bursary to a selection of the top 20 student applicants. Accommodation bookings have already been made at a local student college, St John's College at the nearby University of Queensland.

To apply for a scholarship you must be enrolled at either honours or postgraduate level from Semester 2, 2006. Application forms can be completed electronically at http://auriga.qut.edu.au:8080/apacsummerschool/applications.jsp and should be submitted no later than 30th September, 2006.

Registrations from interested academics will also be possible. At this stage we plan to offer full registrations to staff from APAC member institutions at $250; and registration for non APAC members at $400. Special daily registration will also be available at $50 for APAC members and $100 for non APAC members.
